Ugly..

It's beyond me how anything so ugly, smelly, mangy, rat-tailed, and hair-challenged can be so cute! Go figure. What good are these beasts anyway? What's their purpose in life on this planet? (Especially in my back yard?) I'm sure the Blue Jays, for whom the peanuts are intended, could do without these critters... especially when we consider the intelligence of Blue Jays, in that they know when someone's been messing with their food, and can recognize repeat offenders. (Blue Jays are pretty sharp.) Perhaps these ugly, smelly, mangy, rat-tailed, hair-challenged rodents are here just to remind us arrogant humans that we don't have the answers to much of anything regarding The Creator's plan.

Long live The Creator... Who keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously.

What is the animal called Francie?

Sue,

It's an opossum - they're really rather interesting critters. Wikipedia has a good article. We have a lot of them in this area, along with raccoons and skunks. They come around at night and steal any food they can find - bird seed, cat food, drink out of the dog's water bowl, garbage - if they can get into the bin, etc.

Not rodents but these silly and pernicious creatures called opossums are actually the only North American marsupials...

They are pretty funny looking. They are kind of like the actor Martin Short. Just looking at him makes me laugh.

Birdie, I didn't know who Martin Short was, so I checked out some pictures of him. You're right... his looks made me smile too... great nose and set of teeth - just like our little back yard friend!
